With this project, I wanted to make something totally different to what is usually created by Graphic Arts students. I set myself a task that was challenging, to hopefully push my creativity to another level.
This project was selected to be projected in the atrium, at the 2010 Liverpool School of Art and Design degree show.

The Decline of the Corner Shop

A short film documenting the demise of the corner shop.
The shop owner who I decided to interview was an enthusiastic individual named John. John is under threat by large supermarket chains, with some of his good friends closing their businesses due to the rapid growth of Tesco’s.

Display Box

When I finished the assignment I thought it would
be nice to display the work i had produced in an
old wooden box. I was aiming for the box to look
like it would be seen in a 1940's/50's film noir
film to resemble Cindy Sherman's 'The Complete Untitled Film Stills'.

These are the original photographs for the mini book.
I had numerous ideas for different styles of photography,
so i selected the most appropriate methods. Even though
the photographs are taken from different angles they are
all still black and white to resemble Cindy Sherman.

For the Artist and Object brief i was given Cindy Sherman and Jacket.
To start off with i researched the artist and the object's
meanings. I found a whole lot of different meanings for
the word Jacket. Since Cindy Sherman's most notorious
publication was 'The Unititled Film Stills' which were
photographs that looked like movie stills I decided to recreate
it as a mini book using black and white photography.
As i progressed through several ideas i came up with using the
skin of a potato (the jacket) to portray different movie stars.
This way i could collaborate it with 'The Unititled Film Stills'
however my own version would be called 'The Titled Jacket Stills'
since I was trying to portray a certain movie star. I wanted to
have fun whilst working on this brief since i was dressing up
and decorating potatoes however i did not want my final design
to come across as a joke. This is another reason why i used
black and white photography, i find it to be a lot more
serious than coloured. The characters i chose to include in
my final design where Harry Potter, Jack Nicholson in The Shining,
Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Elvis in
Change of Habit. I chose these pictures from a group
of photographs i had taken not only of these characters
but also others such as Karate Kid and Rambo. The ones
that were selected were the photographs that worked the best
in the book. Cindy Sherman has influnced my work
by the shear detail she captures with her photography.
I found that it is not as easy as it looks to
capture pitures that are forced to be something that they are not.
Her work is undoubtably impressive, not just by her
way of thinking but by the technique she executes
to project and capture such realistic scenes of emotion
that make you believe.
